"Researchers say having a baby improves one’s social life significantly, as most new mother’s find their friend-count increased by eight.

Women before falling pregnant, typically had a minimum of three mates they could rely on and share secrets, while seven in 10-women admitted two of their mates were more out of sheer habit, rather than feeling close ties of friendship with them.

Half of the 4,000 new mothers polled by Katie Barlow from CLIC Sargent indicated, they may have lost touch with one set of friends, only to gain a bigger bunch of them after having a baby.

The survey found, a month after giving birth, most of the new mothers saw a real boom in friends, with 48% saying after having their baby they had focused on forming a close circle of friends that they felt comfortable with and knew they could turn to if when needed.

Most of their new friendships were formed in the school playground (44%), nursery (32%) and coffee mornings (22%), while one in ten met new friends trying to lose pregnancy weight in the gym.

The survey also found eight in ten web savvy mums met online on a regular basis, while two thirds used Facebook for keeping in touch with friends and other mothers.

Half used email, four in 10 texted messages and one in five used instant messaging for chatting or organizing get-togethers with other new mums.

A minimum of two hours were spent surfing the web i. e. online shopping, browsing news sites, gossip pages and Twitter every day.

While, Four in ten feared social isolation after giving birth, nearly half became active members of groups, fundraisers and community projects for meeting new people.

The research was carried out by CLIC Sargent, the children’s cancer charity for marking the launch of Yummy Mummy Week fundraising campaign."
